If anyone asked her how many of them were there, she wouldn’t have been able to answer.

It was like asking someone to tell how many grains of sand are stuck to your cheek. At first it seems like the amount is minute, minuscule compared to the vast expanse of the shore, but when you start counting each grain one by one it seems like there are millions, billions of them.

But instead of grains of sand, the daughters appeared before her.

Each as unique as a branch of coral, as colorful and as mesmerizing as a tropical fish. They floated, no, danced through the water with inhuman grace, their laughter mingling with the soft sound of the tide so that it was impossible to discern whether the tide was an echo of their laughter or if the laughter was a continuation of the tide.

She swam forward, her body relaxed and rested.

She was home.

“We are, unbelievably, still flying over Russia, which continues to be stupidly big. Really enormous. Far bigger than necessary. We’ve been in the air now for about a week, and it doesn’t look like we’ll be landing until the last syllable of recorded time.
